Weathermen Warn Of Tropical Storm Barijat
Tropical storm Barijat is forecast to affect the north and central regions of Laos and everyone should be on the alert for heavy rain and winds due to storm activity from September 12-18.
The weather warning has been issued by the Meteorology and Hydrology Department for 13 provinces as the storm makes its way towards Laos via the South China Sea and Vietnam.
Heading westward at a speed of 15 kilometres per hour, the storm is expected to arrive in the capital and the provinces of Phongsaly, Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Oudomxay, Huaphan, Luang Prabang, Xieng Khuang, Xaysomboun, Xayaboury, Vientiane, Borikhamxay and Khammuan on September 17-18.
People in these areas should be aware of the impact of the severe conditions that could cause flash floods, overflowing rivers, and landslides, leading to property damage and livestock losses.
Thailand has also issued a weather warning forecasting more rain and isolated heavy downpours over the north, northeast, central regions and the east of the country.
The website of Thailand’s Meteorological Department, www.tmd.go.th, warns that tropical storm Barijat is moving west across the South China Sea and is expected to pass over Hong Kong and Hainan from September 13-14, intensifying monsoon rains across Thailand.
At the same time, Typhoon Mangkhut has begun to move through the Pacific Ocean passing Luzon Island in the Philippines and will make landfall in Chinese Taiwan from September 14-15 before continuing onto the South China Sea to reach the mainland from September 16-18.
