Laos will have the opportunity to host the 16th ASEAN School Games for the very first time in its capital Vientiane in 2024, Lao sports authorities said.

Local daily Vientiane Times on Tuesday quoted a Lao official of the Department of Physical and Art Education under the Ministry of Education and Sports, Phoutlamphay Thiemphasone, as saying that the nation will hold the 16th games in 2024 according to the rules set down by the regional competition organizing body.

The ASEAN School Games are usually held in July of each year.

“We plan to present information and hold discussions with the Ministry of Education and Sports so we will be ready to support the 16th School Games,” he said.

This year, Laos will prepare a student team to compete at the 11th ASEAN Schools Games in Indonesia in July which will include swimming, badminton, sepak takraw, basketball, table tennis, tennis, pencak silat, volleyball, and track and field events.

However, Lao student-athletes will only compete in swimming, sepak takraw, badminton, pencak silat, along with some track and field events in Indonesia.

Laos won three bronze medals at last year’s 10th ASEAN School Games in Malaysia, in men’s team’s badminton, men’s team’s sepak takraw and the women’s shot put events. Meanwhile, Laos finished in eighth place with two bronze medals at Singapore’s Ninth ASEAN School Games in July of 2017.

The nation has previously successfully hosted major sporting events such as the SEA Games in 2009 and the ASEAN University Games.
