Four Earthquakes Hit Northern Laos

Four earthquakes occurred in the northern provinces on Monday, with the seismic events measuring from 2.4 to 4.6 on the Richter scale.

According to the Lao National Earthquake Data Centre, the earthquakes occurred in Xayaboury, Xaysomboun and Luang Prabang provinces.

The first quake occurred at 8.29am in Xayaboury province’s Xaysathan district at a depth of 10 kilometres below the earth’s surface. The tremor’s central point, which measured 2.4 on the Richter scale, was located at 19.447 N and 101.292 E at Sala village, 11 kilometres from the district centre.

The second tremor occurred at around 11am at Otay village in Chao Anouvong district, Xaysomboun province. The quake registered 3.1 on the Richter scale and was centred at 18.815 N and 103.067 E, 10 kilometres below ground and about 10 kilometres from the district centre.

The third earthquake, which registered 3.9 on the Richter scale, also took place in Chao Anouvong district and was recorded four minutes later. The central point of the quake was at Luangphanhxay village with coordinates of 19.079 N and 103.111 E, about 20 kilometres from the district centre.

The strongest earthquake registered 4.5 on the Richter scale and occurred in Luang Prabang province’s Phoukhoun district.

The quake was detected at a depth of 83 kilometres at 19.73 N and 102.75 E. It occurred close to Dongnguen village in Phonxay district, which is 46 kilometres from the centre of Phoukhoun district.
