Another person in Vientiane has tested positive for Covid-19 after sharing a room with a friend who had contracted the virus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 19.
Standing Deputy Head of the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control, Dr Phouthone Muongpak, said on Sunday the latest victim of the virus was a 21-year-old male student living in Phonpaphao village, Sisattanak district.
The young man shared the same accommodation with his friend, who was named as the 16th person to be infected between March 27 and April 8.
The same building, located in Nongduangthong village, was home to the 16th, 17th and 18th people to be identified as having the virus.“The two men are friends and live in the same building.
The student who tested positive for the virus on Sunday regularly ate with the 16th, 17th and 18th people who contracted the virus from March 29 to April 4,” Dr Phouthone said.
The latest victim returned to the building on April 8. The taskforce contacted him and advised him to go to Mitthaphab Hospital to be tested for the virus. On April 11, he went to the hospital and tested positive for Covid-19, and is now being treated at Mitthaphab.
From January to April 11, a total of 1,140 people were tested and 19 found to be infected with the coronavirus. They are all currently in hospital.From March 23 to April 11, a total of 429 people were monitored for the disease, with 346 being kept in quarantine or under close observation for 14 days. Eighty-three people continue to be monitored for symptoms.
As of 5pm on April 11, some 1,678 people entering Laos had been checked for Covid-19. Of these, 824 people crossed the border from Thailand and were mostly chauffeurs and the drivers of trucks bringing goods into Laos.
A total of 546 people entered Laos from Vietnam, all of whom were truck drivers. No passengers entered Laos at airports. At all of these checkpoints, the temperature of each traveller was checked, but no one showed signs of a fever. Among the 46 people most recently tested for the virus, 32 were in Vientiane and 14 in the provinces.
As of April 11, the coronavirus had spread to 210 countries and territories, with at least 1.776,935 million confirmed cases globally. The virus has claimed 108,737 lives while more than 402,010 people have recovered.
