Contemporary Art Exhibition Opens in Vientiane

The inaugural “Hope: Lao Contemporary Art Exhibition” (LCAE) has opened in Vientiane, bringing together leading figures in Lao contemporary art and highlighting special needs children.
The exhibition explores various dimensions of society, culture, and hope through diverse artistic expressions, and can be viewed until November 10 at the Naga Mall on the fourth floor of the Parkson shopping mall.
In an era filled with uncertainty, the exhibition seeks to convey the deep reflections of artists on hope, life, and humanity. It features a wide range of art forms including painting, video, sculpture, installation, and audiovisual works, showcasing the diversity and creative potential of contemporary Lao art.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, LCAE founder and curator Mr Liu Ailun said “Hope is not a grand declaration, but rather the small, warm moments that we can all recognise. Through this exhibition, we aim to share the warmth and vitality of contemporary art with a wider audience. Despite the challenges facing the world, art remains a beacon of light, guiding us forward.”
“In this fragile yet precious world, let us come together to seek out hope. Through art, we aspire to illuminate even the darkest corners.”
In addition to showcasing artistic works, the exhibition aims to raise funds for initiatives supporting special needs children in Laos, further highlighting the role of art in driving social change.
Contemporary artists are using their work to respond to a range of pressing social issues, from the preservation of cultural heritage to environmental protection.
Art serves as a key medium for these artists to express their ideas and challenge the constraints of the present. These artists may leave subtle marks, but each small breakthrough testifies to the growing strength and potential of contemporary Lao art.
One of the artists showcasing his work at the event, President of the Lao Sign Association and President of Khounta Sign Advertising, Mr Vongnam Vongvilay, is a renowned Lao artist and creative pioneer, celebrated for his work in advertising, fine arts, and graphic design.
A graduate of the Central Art School of Komárno in Slovakia, he specialises in oil painting and sculpture, exploring the intersection of traditional and contemporary art. Throughout his career, Vongnam has showcased his art in Slovakia and beyond, mastering techniques such as painting, watercolour, and sculpture. His passion for Lao culture is reflected in his work, which deeply connects with the country’s natural beauty and heritage.
The exhibition is co-organised by Hope Vision Laos and Lines Studio by Lab De Lines, with sponsorship from Naga Mall, CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd., China Southern Power Grid, Mekong Frequency, Khounta Sign, and Sky-surfing Commercial Travel Agent., Ltd.
Development and artistic partners include the Swiss Cooperation Mekong, the Art House Café, and CineArt Film.
LCAE is an emerging platform for showcasing contemporary art in Laos, aimed at promoting the growth of the genre and fostering international cultural exchange.
