Police suspect a 60-year-old Chinese national who was found shot dead in front of Sikhay Plaza shopping mall in Sikhottabong district on Saturday morning was killed because of a business dispute.

The officer in charge of the Sikhottabong police station, who asked not to be named, told Vientiane Times yesterday that the incident occurred at around 9:15am on Saturday.

The man was identified as Mr Su Wang Tien. He had been running businesses in Laos for many years and was the owner of Sikhay Plaza which was slated for opening at the end of this year. Police found nine bullets in his body, which lay near his SUV.

Police are investigating the identity of the gunman whom they say is known to them and expect to make an arrest soon, the police supervisor said.

This is the second murder in Vientiane in recent weeks after the high-profile killing of a woman and her domestic helper in Salakham village, Hadxaifong district, at the beginning of last month.
Police are now trying to track down the gunman in this latest incident.
