Four more people have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of known cases in Laos to 58, the Ministry of Health announced on Saturday.

The spike in the number of new infections raises the likelihood of an outbreak of the virus in Laos as the number of cases surges in neighbouring countries.

Director General of the ministry’s Department of Communicable Disease Control, Dr Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh, told a press conference on Saturday that the four new cases involved Lao workers returning home from Thailand for Lao New Year.

The 55th confirmed case was a 25-year year-old woman who had been working in Bangkok, Thailand, and whose home is in Hinhoun district, Khammuan province.
