Lane Xang Avenue To Have Makeover

The Lane Xang Avenue improvement and beautification project is set to kick off once a feasibility study has been completed under the supervision of Vientiane authorities.

The project will include the construction of symbols relevant to the history of Vientiane’s main thoroughfare such as elephants, while electricity poles will be painted green in line with one of the city’s official slogans.

Other related works include repaving the sidewalks, painting buildings, houses and shops along both sides of the road, and planting flowering shrubs and trees.

Vientiane Mayor Dr Sinlavong Khoutphaythoun described the planned transformation of Lane Xang Avenue at a recent press conference, saying “Improving this road will make the capital a safer, more modern, orderly and attractive place to live, work and visit.”

Dr Sinlavong said it had become necessary to expand and improve the road to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. The authorities need to enforce traffic and construction laws in the area, he added.

Many people have built commercial property in areas where there are no car parks, forcing people to park on roadsides and blocking narrow streets.

Authorities hope the upgrade will also go some way to addressing traffic congestion as the government considers this issue to be a matter of urgency, and cooperation by all sectors concerned is required to find a solution.
