Laos Records 440 New Covid Cases, 2 More Deaths

A total of 11,753 total cases of Covid-19 have now been recorded in Laos with the announcement on Friday of 440 new cases, while two more deaths from the virus were also reported.

Some 75 locally-transmitted cases were recorded, with 58 in Savannakhet, 13 in Bokeo, one in Xekong, and three in Luang Namtha province.

The tenth person to die from Covid was a 55-year-old man in Savannakhet province who suffered from hypertension, according to the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.


Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the Deputy Director General of the Communicable Diseases Control Department, Ministry of Health, Dr Sisavath Soutthanilaxay, said the man died in hospital at 1am on Wednesday after his condition worsened.

Another death was recorded in Khammuan province, where a 26-year-old woman died on Friday. She arrived in Laos from Thailand on August 3 and tested positive for Covid-19 on August 7, then exhibited serious symptoms after giving birth. She is survived by her newborn child.

There are now 106 quarantine centres across Laos and 51 government-designated hotels providing quarantine facilities. At present, 11,605 people are in quarantine and there are 4,604 active cases of Covid-19

Of the 58 locally-transmitted cases recorded in Savannakhet province, 48 were reported among people staying at the provincial detention centre.
