Mother and Child Hospital Claims Success With IVF Treatment

Mother and Child Hospital (MCH) in Vientiane has presented its successful results of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatments using intracytoplasmic sperm Injection (ICSI) for women wanting to fall pregnant.

This year, the hospital has recorded a 90 percent success rate in women falling pregnant through IVF with the ICSI method, a health official said.

The ICSI method has proven more successful than others with treatment ranging from 500,000 kip to 30 million kip per patient.

IVF specialist at MCH, Dr Chaimoua Shouako recently updated local media on the successful results and other current issues in assisting couples to have families.

“ICSI is a procedure in which a single sperm cell is injected directly into the cytoplasm of an egg. This technique is used in order to prepare the gametes for the abstention of embryos that may be transferred to a maternal uterus,” he said.

Since the end of 2009, specialists at the hospital have used IVF via intrauterine insemination (IUI).
“IUI is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilisation,” he said.

“From 2009 to 2016, over 2,000 women wanting to fall pregnant visited the hospital to receive advice and treatment using the IUI method and some women are pregnant. But, it hasn’t been as successful as the ICSI method,” he added.

Deputy Director General of MCH, Dr Souvanaheuang Somboun said “If a couple has been married for one year and the woman is not pregnant, they are advised to consult with doctors”.

He said Thailand and other Asean countries have been successfully utilising the ICSI method for several years.

In Laos, the successful treatments began at the end of 2017 and hospital authorities expect to treat many more women next year.
