Motorists Warned To Avoid Kasy-Nan Road

Source: Vientiane Times

Motorists driving between Vientiane and Luang Prabang are advised to avoid the section of Road No. 4C between Kasy district in Vientiane province and Nan district in Luang Prabang province after rain has made conditions hazardous.

The road in this area, especially at the top of 9km Mountain, is now very slippery and should be avoided by trucks in particular, although four wheel-drive vehicles should be able to negotiate the road with caution.

Director of Kasy district’s Public Works and Transport office, Mr Phan Namvong, told Vientiane Times that work is underway to repair and widen this section of road but motorists should avoid it in the meantime.

Those who do use the road should act with caution due to the repair work and misty conditions in the morning.

The 68 km section of national Road No. 4C in this area is steep and winding and is the scene of many accidents. The sharp bends have caused vehicles to drive off the road and plunge down precipices.

A safer route to the northern provinces is via Road No. 13 through Phoukhoun district.

Authorities in Vientiane province plan to set up a rescue station at 9km Mountain in Kasy district, to provide emergency assistance when accidents occur.

The plan is to build a rescue station that would have ambulances, medical staff and equipment, and volunteers from the Lao Red Cross on standby.
