City authorities are overseeing the creation of a small park on the site of the former Ministry of Justice, which is located next to the Patuxay Monument.

The shady spot will be an added attraction for visitors to the monument and help to beautify the area.

Phase 1 of the development began this month and is expected to be complete by September, according to the Director of the Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department, Mr Bounyavath Niraxay.

The site covers an area of 1.5 hectares and will provide a green space in the city center, with trees providing shade, as well as a landscaped garden, stall selling snacks and souvenirs, and public toilets. There is also parking nearby.

The park will be a welcome addition to the city’s public spaces and the trees, when mature, will provide much-needed shade in an area that is dominated by concrete structures.

Its creation is especially relevant this year while Laos holds the ASEAN chairmanship, while the country is also hosting Visit Laos Year and Vientiane will host a meeting of ASEAN capital governors.

The park was designed by an advisory committee of architects, professors, and students from the National University of Laos with financial support from the Commerce Department of Yunnan province, China, amounting to US$300,000, and another contribution from Vientiane.

A consulting and construction company from Yunnan province is building the park in line with the approved design.

The capital’s most popular parks are Chao Anouvong Park, Mekong Riverside Park, Buddha Park (Vat Xieng Khuan temple), Inpeng Ethnic Culture Park, King Sisavangvong Park, and Chao Fa Ngum Park.
