Over 5,000 people have been infected with dengue virus, with capital Vientiane hard hit with one death, Lao Ministry of Health has reported.

Apart from the death in the capital, one death has been reported in each of the following provinces: Khammouane, Savannakhet, Saravane, and Attapeu while Champasak has three people dead of dengue fever since the beginning of 2017, according to Lao News Agency (KPL) on Friday,

Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith recently issued an order urging the Ministry of Health and relevant sectors to take preventive and suppression measures against dengue outbreaks in the country.

Over recent years, Lao health ministry has urged the public to follow rules, including covering both indoor and outdoor water containers and draining and cleaning outdoor containers to prevent from the disease.
