Temperatures To Plummet Further

The Meteorology and Hydrology Department has issued a warning urging the public to rug up and keep warm to protect their health as temperatures are set to drop even lower across the country.

China’s cold snap is still gaining strength and will be passing over all parts of the country in the next few days.

The department’s Weather Forecasting and Aeronautical Meteorology Division has predicted temperatures will plummet to between 0 and 2 degrees Celsius in northern and central parts of Laos today, with fog coverage over large areas in northern provinces and morning mist in central and southern provinces.

Temperatures in Phongsaly province and Luang Namtha province and Sing district, will drop to about 3 degrees today.

Meanwhile, Viengxay and Xam Neua districts of Huaphan will receive temperatures of between 0-1 degrees and Xieng Khuang and Oudomxay provinces will experience lows of around 2-4 degrees.

Central areas, particularly Vientiane, Savannakhet province and Pakxan, Borikhamxay province will experience lows of about 10-11 degrees with Khamkeut and Xaysomboun dropping to 2 degrees.

Temperatures in Khammuan province and southern parts of Pakxong district will fall to 5 degrees.

Authorities say the weather this dry season is cooler than last year with the coldest minimum temperature recorded last year at 3.4 degrees in Xaysomboun.

Domestic flights from Vientiane to northern parts of the country may be cancelled or delayed due to the fog coverage.

The Lao Red Cross is always ready to provide assistance to the public, and can offer blankets and winter clothing to poor or disadvantaged people when provinces require assistance.
