Local tour companies are continuing efforts to promote Laos as an adventure tourism destination with a recent exhibition held at the Vientiane Center shopping mall.

The event to raise awareness of the country’s adventure activities is part of the ongoing Visit Laos 2018 campaign under the slogan “Laos, Simply Beautiful”.

A staffer at a tour company which sells adventure package tours in northern Laos, Mr Sone Chanthavy, said Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Huaphan, Khammuan and Champassak provinces and Vangvieng district were offering tourists new adventure experiences with trekking, mountain climbing, biking, abseiling, zip-lining, tree-house sleepovers, camping, and traditional lifestyle education all on offer.

Nam Kat River, aka Nam Kat Yola Pa, in Oudomxay province early this year rolled out additional activities with a new rope spider web and wire suspension bridge for visitors to explore.

Green Discovery Laos is another successful adventure travel and eco-tourism business that has launched new activities such as zip-lining followed by a cup of coffee in the middle of Tad Fan waterfall.

These new activities have been garnering interest from local and Thai television programmes as well as trending on social media such as Facebook.

Mr Sone expects the number of visitors engaging in adventure activities this year to increase through the Visit Laos 2018 campaign, with domestic tourists rising by about 15 percent.

However, officials from the Lao Association of Travel Agents noted that while Laos has plenty of wonderful scenery, caves and waterfalls, better facilities and services as well as improved road access is needed.

Some people are interested in visiting other parts of the country after reading about them on social networks but are put off by the inconvenience they encounter when travelling.

Therefore, a comprehensive plan of activities and events should ensure the improvement of tourist sites and facilities as this was important in persuading people to visit Laos or to return.

The government is aiming to bring 5 million tourists to the country this year through the Visit Laos Year 2018 campaign, up from the 4.8 million tourists who visited in 2017.
