New Mahosot Hospital Set For Completion In May 2022

Construction of the new Mahosot Hospital in Vientiane is expected to be fully complete in May 2022, the leader of the project’s technical team, Mr Wang Zigang, told Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning and Investment Dr Sonexay Siphandone on Wednesday.

“In the meantime, doctors and patients will move into some of the new buildings in May and June this year and some old buildings will be demolished to make way for the construction of the second wing in July,” he said.

Construction has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic after work began in November 2018.

Mr Wang Zigang said there are two parts to the new hospital and the first wing will be ready for use in May and June.

The new hospital will have 600 beds and a rooftop helicopter pad. It is being built on the site of the existing hospital in Sisattanak district and is financed through a Chinese grant of 590.7 million yuan (839.6 billion kip).

The new facility is being built on 30,300 square metres and will cover over 60 percent of Mahosot’s total land area of 54,792.64 square metres.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the project took place in 2017 and was attended by President Bounnhang Vorachit and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

The project comprises five buildings: a nine-storey building to accommodate patients, a five-storey and two four-storey buildings that will house medical departments, and a 400-seat conference room.

When the hospital becomes operational it will be the largest in Laos, boasting state-of-the-art equipment and quality healthcare.
Chinese assistance has three parts, namely construction of the hospital, the provision of modern medical equipment, and training of Lao medical staff.

Mahosot Hospital was built in 1903 and had 450 beds. The hospital’s two main buildings, which were built during the time of French rule, will not be demolished.

During yesterday’s meeting, Dr Sonexay and the technical team discussed problems encountered during construction and plans for use of the new hospital.
