Two New Cases Carry Covid-19 Infections To 14 / 7.4.2020

Two more Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Laos with the total number rising to 14, after additional tests returned positive, the relevant task force announced on April 7.

The new infected cases were confirmed as the government’s three-week stay-at-home restriction measures (from April 1-19) to contain the spread of the virus make an impact.

The two additional Covid-19 positives were identified among 73 suspected samples, National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control deputy head Associate Prof. Dr Phouthone Muongpak told a press conference on Tuesday

One is a male resident of Donkoi village in Sisattanak district, Vientiane

On March 30, the victim developed flu-like symptoms and suffered headaches and muscle aches.

A day later, he went to Mittaphab Hospital for testing. Between March 30-31, the victim had been in contact with the individual that would become the eleventh COVID-19 case.

April 1, the patient suffered a sore throat, coughing, tiredness and breathing difficulties, leading him to self-medicate.

April 2, the victim decided to travel from Phubia mine site in Xaysomboun province to the capital. April 5, the victim received information regarding his colleague’s Covid-19 infection which led him to go to Mittaphab Hospital where he returned a positive test.

The other case is a female resident of Xangkhou village,  Xaythany district Vientiane. Between  March 22 – 23, the victim travelled from London to Laos via Thailand.

March 23 – April 5, the patient was in self quarantine at home. On April 5, she learned her friend had been infected with the virus that causes Covid-19 .

Testing at Mittaphab Hospital returned a positive result. “Measures will be updated and tightened accordingly,” Dr Phouthone told Lao and foreign media.

Health officials are tracking places and accommodation where the affected persons visited as well as people they had close contact with in an attempt to track transmission and control the outbreak. “We have our teams in the provinces to collect detailed information,” Dr Phouthone said.

Meanwhile, the 40-year-old male worker from Phu Bia mining company and Lao student who returned from London, UK and a are being treated at the 150-Bed Hospital also known as Mittaphab Hospital.

As of April 6, reports showed that Covid-19 had spread to 209 countries and territories with 1,342,265 infected cases reported, according to the Ministry of Health.
