Big Savings at Big C

Many expats enjoy a day in Udon Thani combined with a shopping trip. The town offers a plethora of supermarket shopping venues with everything from corner stores to hypermarts but one venue often overlooked and undervalued is Big C. This Thai owned chain that now also operates in Vietnam has an outlet in Udon Thani quite unfortunately hidden behind an overpass. Neverthless, for the discerning shopper, Big C can turn out to be quite a good destination.

The centre itself houses houses many smaller retail, banking and restaurant venues and Big C is located on the second floor. Big C is divided into various including a good selection of food and frozen goods, homewares, kitchenware, sportsware, cosmetics and a limited eletronics and home theatre area. The staff are generally very friendly, however keep in mind that Big C can be quite crowded on weekends.

If you’re feeling peckish the Big C centre features the usual Thai fast food outlets such as KFC, Donut King and Dairy Queen. If you’re after something a little more authentic there is also an extensive food court on the second floor aptly named ‘Food Park’. Exchange your cash for a plastic coupon card here and then go wild at the various venues with everything from international to specialty stalls (‘Noodle Station’ has always been a hit). Best of all, most dishes at the Food Park are not even over 50 baht each.

All in all Big C makes a great alternative to Tesco Lotus if you’re on your way to Makro anyway and you can even find some items at Big C cheaper than those at Tesco or Makro. It’s located approximately 4km from the Udon Thani city centre.
