Strong Monsoon Generating Thunderstorms In Central, Southern Regions

A strong prevailing southwest monsoon will increase cloud cover across Laos and is expected to lead to thunderstorms with rain and strong winds from July 16-19.
The forecast issued on Monday by the Meteorology and Hydrology Department predicted that hot conditions and rain can be expected in central and southern regions.
The department’s updated forecast requested that officials and residents in the target provinces prepare for possible weather extremes and urged them to monitor the media for updates.
From July 16-19, the capital and central provinces including Vientiane, Borikhamxay, Khammuan and Savannakhet, can expect storms with rain and strong wind gusts. Temperatures will range from 23-36C.
The southern provinces of Saravan, Champassak, Xekong and Attapeu are expecting rain and strong wind gusts. Temperatures will range from 24-36C.
In the north, the Meteorology and Hydrology Department said Phongsaly, Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Bokeo, Luang Prabang and Xayaboury provinces would experience thunderstorms bringing rainfall and strong winds. Temperatures are expected to range from 18-31C.

Neighbouring Thailand has also issued a weather warning for June 15-17 including isolated heavy rains.
Due to the strong southwest monsoon prevailing across the Andaman Sea and Thailand, and the low-pressure cell covering upper Laos and upper Vietnam, isolated heavy to very heavy falls are likely in the north, northeast, central, eastern, and southern regions.
People in those areas should beware of the severe conditions that may cause flash floods and water runoff.
In Laos, torrential rains and flash floods hit Luang Namtha province on Sunday. Fortunately, no casualties were reported after the inundation, local officials said.
The military and local authorities are helping to move people and take their belongings to higher ground.
The authorities are also helping villagers to clean and repair their homes after the water level decreased. They are providing essential supplies, especially drinking water, noodles and dry food, to affected families,
Last year, thunderstorms, flash floods and hail hit many provinces, affecting electricity poles, houses, livestock and crops. The capital and the provinces of Vientiane, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Champassak, Attapeu, Xieng Khuang, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang and Xayaboury were the worst affected, according to official reports.
