When you are living in a tropical country, getting a mosquito-free home is a dream. Most of us buy mosquito repellent sprays or coils or liquids which will get rid of mosquitoes inside the house. But most of these are heavy in chemicals and can harm the people in the house apart from creating breathing difficulties.
Apart from the dangerous diseases spread by mosquitoes such as malaria, dengue, and yellow fever, mosquitoes can be very annoying since mosquito bites can keep itching long after the bite and the noise they make can also prevent you from falling asleep.
There are certain steps you need to take if you are wondering how to control mosquitoes at home.
Here are ways to get rid of mosquitoes inside the house:
1. Stop mosquitoes from entering your home
If you want a mosquito-free home, you need to first make sure mosquitoes aren’t entering your home. When it is dusk and the sun is going down, tightly close all doors and windows if you don’t have nets attached to them already.
While sunlight keeps away mosquitoes to a certain extent, they are much more active after dusk. To get rid of mosquitoes inside the house, you can stop them from entering.
You can buy door strips online that will block the space around your doors and windows from where mosquitoes can enter the house.
2. Stop mosquitoes from breeding inside the house
If you are wondering how to control mosquitoes at home, another thing you should check is if there is anywhere inside your home where mosquitoes are breeding.
Pooled water from your AC or in the garden can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. If there are places inside the house such as storerooms or kitchen lofts where you stack old items, clean those areas from time to time as mosquitoes are likely to make a nest there.
Fill in ditches with dirt just outside your home so there are fewer mosquitoes around your house and make sure drains are covered and cleaned regularly.
3. Keep mosquito-repellent plants
An easy way to get rid of mosquitoes inside the house is to keep indoor mosquito-repellent plants. These plants can be kept inside your room or on your desks for a mosquito-free home.
Some of these plants will not only keep away mosquitoes but other pests and mice as well. These plants are usually smaller, so they can easily be kept indoors to control mosquitoes at home.
Some of the indoor mosquito repellent plants are marigolds, tulsi, lemongrass, citronella (this one prefers colder climates), mint, and catnip.
4. Keep sliced lemon and cloves around the house
A tried and tested method to get a mosquito-free home is to use lemons with cloves. Mosquitoes hate the smell of cloves and anything citrusy. So slice a lemon in two, and push in cloves into both the halves.
Keep plates of these clove-infused lemons to get rid of mosquitoes inside the house. It is a natural and harmless indoor mosquito repellent.
5. Use garlic spray to control mosquitoes
If you don’t want to use chemical-laden mosquito sprays, a simple garlic spray would be great for a mosquito-free home.
Crush or mince a few cloves of garlic and boil it in water for some time. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray it around the house to control mosquitoes at home.
Garlic has several properties and can be used to avoid mosquitoes in the house. The stench of garlic can be pungent but even though it kills mosquitoes instantly, it will dissipate and you won’t be able to smell it for long.
6. Keep a dish of soapy water
Did you know a dish of soapy water can act as an indoor mosquito repellent? To control mosquitoes at home, you can place a wide dish of soapy water inside your house.
Make sure the dish is soapy enough to be covered in bubbles. You can use dishwashing soap or detergent for this.
Mosquitoes are attracted to water. But once they sit on this dish of soapy water, they will get trapped in the bubbles and die, thus giving you a mosquito-free home.
7. Keep a dish of beer or alcohol
If you have a beer or some other alcohol, this is a great way to get rid of mosquitoes inside the house. Just keep a dish of beer or alcohol in your home to control mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes cannot stand the smell of beer and alcohol, and this method will remove mosquitoes from the house.
